Overall Physical Health – Excellent (5)
Johnny B Goode is in Overall Excellent Health. He came in a little skinny but has gained weight and is now doing fantastic. This puts him at a Body Scale of 5.
(1=severely emaciated, 5 – 6 normal, 10 = morbidly obese)
Overall Mental Health – Excellent (5)
Johnny B Goode is in Excellent Mental Health. He has overcome shyness to his rear and can be pet there, we believe he was sore there because he appeared to have been hit by a car. He originally had issues when reaching for and holding his collar, but has shown significant improvement in this area. He has a great attitude with immediate forgiveness to people and animals. Johnny is somewhat strong willed in training. Some stubbornness is to be expected when it comes to obedience training, although that too has improved. He can be considered to be above higher intelligence and can be resourceful and clever. His hallmark is a charismatic, easygoing, and pleasant personality.
People – Good (4)
This dog generally does not know a stranger. He is open and jovial with just about everyone. He may initially bark at someone in a stressful situation (like in a pet store, but warms up quickly).
Children – Good (4)
Johnny is wonderful with children of all ages. He is sweet and calm. If they actively initiate play with him, then he is most definitely playful! He is no longer mouthy and doesn't need to be as closely observed with very small children. He never exuded any pressure, but his teeth were still sharp and could have accidentally scratched. He is an ideal dog to have with kids of multiple energy levels. Johnny would be an excellent first dog for a family with kids.
Dogs – Excellent (5)
Johnny loves other dogs. He does not need special introductions. He is open and friendly with dogs of all sizes and breeds. He very much enjoys the dog park and playing with anyone who will play back. He is not an instigator of bad play and if another dog tries to be rude, forceful, or attack him, he will roll on his back and just put his feet up. Even if this happens in any way, he immediately forgives and forgets and will happily play with them once they have calmed down and are ready to interact again. He has no issue with dogs with disabilities and is respectful of them.
Cats – Average (3)
He does like cats, but if they run he will chase them. Should go into a home with a self-confident cat, dominant cat, or a cat whom is dog savvy.
Pocket Pets – Unknown
We would caution to having Johnny interact with small animals such as rodents. Due to him chasing cats who run, smaller animals should likely be kept from him directly. Johnny is part Beagle, making him in the 'Hunting Dog' category. Although untried, it would be best that these animals be played with behind doors or in their enclosures when they share the same space.
Behavioral Issues – Mild (2)
Johnny B Goode has few undesired behaviors that are livable or easily fixed, we will note improvements.
Energy - Average (3)
Johnny has a very average energy level. He will play when you play and relax when you relax. This means that Johnny can be as active as a Boxer but he also doesn't need quite the same rigorous activity to be able to wind down. Johnny is a fun dog who wants to do whatever it is you want to do. He enjoys walks, swimming, going the dog park, goofing around, tug of war, and zoomies. When the family is not active he is happy to entertain himself with dog toys or sleep. At night he is not restless and if allowed, he will lay at the end of the bed and stay there till morning.
Barking – Average (3)
He will bark at cats to try and get them to play. Eventually he does lose interest. He will bark to ask to come inside after going potty when in a yard. He will bark when you leave the house, but will stop after a few barks knowing you've left. He does occasionally bark when playing with other dogs. Though he is highly likely part Beagle, he isn't as noisy or frequent with barking as they tend to be. Lastly, he does alert bark when someone comes to the door, but will stop once you come to check it out. For the most part he barks when most dogs do, and we give him a mid-rating of 3 for noise.
Swimming - Fair (2)
Johnny has discovered that the enjoys going into the pool. He has learned how to swim, but he is still learning to use his back legs. Until he has improved he should not be left alone near a body of water that he cannot easily get out of (ie an above ground pool with a ladder). Prior to coming to ALPRAS he could not swim at all. He would panic once he hit the water and begin going under, failing to even tread water successfully. We have made it a point to teach him how to swim and most importantly to keep his head above water. Though his muzzle is more Beagle in length, his nose still has a little upturn like a Boxer making it easier for water to get inside. He also will try to drink or bite at the water while swimming which, while amusing, can cause him to cough and occasionally panic. Right now, he can swim but has to be encouraged to keep his rear upwards and use his back legs. We have even given him the command 'Butt Up' to remind him of this when he starts sinking. He will relax in someone arms in the pool, although he will often 'hug' you with his paws on your shoulders and kiss your face (Guys who are bald or have short hair watch out! He loves to lick the top of your head!). Sometime he will try to 'ride' another dog. Johnny has learned to enjoy the water and is improving his swimming skill every time.
Toys - Good (4)
This dog loves to play with dog toys. Tennis Balls, Ropes, Chew Bones, Animal 'skins', Treat Interactive Toys, Plastic Bottles (in or out of fabric), Kongs, and probably anything you can think of. When it comes to Plushies or Squeaky Toys there is a caution. He likes to tear apart plushies and 'make it snow' so he is better off with Animal 'Skins' such as the foxes, skunks, rabbits, raccoon, and anything without fluff. Squeaky Toys are a toy he must be watched with. Many 'skins'come with a squeaky already inside. He will play with them and have them make noise, but he will also try to take out the squeak device after a while. Since this is a choking hazard for dogs when outside of the toy, it is best to either have a 'skin' without a squeaky in it or to just take it out of the toy yourself. He does not guard his toys and will allow you to take it from him. He has learned the command to 'drop' though he is often reluctant to do so in the beginning. He has been taught 'take' as a way to know it is ok for him to have the toy. The hardest one for him to give up are ropes and tug toys. He has been taught the command 'tug, tug, tug' for when its ok to play that game. In general, most toys are safe and we encourage providing him with variety of dog toys to keep him entertained.
Known Commands:
Sit, Wait, On, Off, Back, Swim, 'Butt Up' (for swimming), Play, 'tug, tug, tug' (for ropes and tug toys), Drop, Come(here), Eat, Drink, Leave It, No(when needed), Yes, Go, Stay, Go Potty, Kisses, Crate, Down, Go Poop, Bring, Quiet,Take, Give, Stop, Enough, Give Space, Over, Up, Through, Get out of That, Go Do Something With Yourself, Play, I'm Gonna Gitcha!
Special Note: Johnny can be very attentive to people and dog needs. He has watched one of the Service Dogs, Titus, pick things up that have been dropped and bring them. This way to please and get a lot of 'good boy' attention has spurred him to do the same. He will often retrieve a dropped phone, remote, or other objects to bring to you. He is not always as good about giving it at first because part of him wants to play, but ultimately he wants the 'good boy' attention and will give it over. We have commented on more than one occasion that he would be a good candidate for a Service or Therapy dog with his gentle and fun nature that is eager to please.
Commands Working On:
Heel
Other Notes:
Johnny B Goode is a joy to have around. His love of people makes him an excellent companion for a family. His outgoing personality and playful antics make him easy to love. He would be a great 'First Dog' for just about everyone. Johnny is user friendly and comes with very few 'issues' that are either easily fixed with basic training or livable with. We update his profile and make changes as he improves, changes, and we get to know even more about him. As with all ALPRAS animals, we work daily with Johnny, and strive to provide as much information as we can about this sweet boy. Behavioral Issues – Mild (2)
Johnny B Goode has few undesired behaviors that are livable or easily fixed, we will note improvements.
- He came in 'mouthy', and needed to be watched around very small children initially due to his sharp teeth, as should any dog. He is no longer mouthy and has been around children as young as 2 with no issue.
- He does not chew furniture any longer, though when he arrived he did target one wooden piece. He no longer chews on anything other than appropriate objects.
- He does love to lay on couches and beds. He has been trained for on/off commands for this and has done very well. Please note that:
- His collar shyness initially resulted in mild temper tantrums where he got on his hind legs and became mouthy. This issue is completely resolved.
- When going outside to potty, he must be watched to make sure he goes potty in the backyard. Once he does his business, he doesn't have accidents when on a schedule. He will bark to be let in if left alone to long.
- He should be monitored when drinking, especially during very hot weather or lots of exercise or if he's been drinking the pool water while swimming. He will over hydrate and if he does this he will need to go out a few more times than normal. He is pretty good at asking to go, but better to preemptively take him out to briefly relieve himself. This is not so much a behavioral issue, but it matters for making certain he pees in appropriate places because of how full his bladder gets.
- He is a door charger, another thing that is being worked on good results. He has learned 'wait' and 'stay'. He also knows 'back', but he still tries to take a few steps forward again after you look away from time to time. If he successfully slips out, he doesn't go far. Johnny has a strong pack membership need and will never stray too far. As long as he is not chased he will just come back. In fact, running in the opposite direction from him often makes him think to come and play!
- His worst behavior is being an escape artist. The home and fencing must be checked to ensure the adopter is aware of areas that can be squeezed through and also warned about windows with no screening. If he is not left alone by himself outside, he will not be bored enough to look for escape routes, even if it is just another dog companion.
