Jasmine 'Jazz' PIJasmine PI (aka Jazz), passed away on February 28th.
Jazz had recently been declared a full Sanctuary Dog in December and no longer up for adoption due to her age and her little likelihood of finding a family after nearly 10 years. Mostly Blind and Deaf, our well loved 3 Legged wonder dog had become very much in need for a wheelchair. Before we could obtain it she started taking a sharp downturn in health. Her leg wouldn't hold her at all and she could not even drag herself despite having a very strong chest. She had been getting more and more confused as to where she was, even needing help finding food, water, and the door to outside. Finally on the last few days, she was exhausted despite sleeping over 90% of her days. On the 28th it was decided to help her pass when she had clearly given up. Jazz was humanely euthanized with her caretakers present and her face cradled in loving hands. She went very peacefully and even the vet stated that she looked incredibly relieved. Jasmine PI was a strong girl and a fighter. She overcame many obstacles in her life and we were honored to have her as an ALPRAS dog. |
Who she Was |
Jazz was a sweet girl. Always up for affection and treats. She loved humans and was a staunch defender of her home. She was brave and out of any dog there at the time, we knew she was the ultimate protector. Jazz was fearless and took her disability worth a grain of salt. Many people were educated about disabled animals through meeting her and were always impressed and inspired by her tenacity.

Her History |
Jasmine Pie 'Jazz' Had a busy tale to tell. This girl was hit by a car in rural NC. Her owners, who used Jazz and her Mate to hunt for food for the family, were unable to pay for her care so they brought her into Animal Control where she was able to be pulled to rescue. Her Back Leg was Shattered, she had Heartworms, and was Pregnant with 6 Puppies! She was a good momma despite being unable to have her leg fixed, have pain medicine, or get heartworm treatment. As soon as the puppies were 6 weeks, she was finally able to get the medical care she needed to treat her heartworms, amputate her leg, and get spayed.
Despite great efforts over many years to have her adopted, she continued to be looked over. A 'broken' black dog, she has not been not ‘eye catching’ enough. Though she was a wonderful dog with people and tolerant of certain male dogs, she didn't like female dogs at all unless they were very small. Her issues with female dogs and tolerance of specific male dogs is not uncommon to a real hunting dog, which she was. She spent most of her final days relaxing on couches on her bad days so that it could help her get on her feet more easily or orthopedic dog beds on better days to help with the arthritis. She took Anti Inflammatory and Pain Medicines as needed. Despite her age and issues she remained strong until the end. Jazz loved beds and blankets and was all about being spoiled with treats, while keeping her figure of course. One of her favorite activities was sunning herself by the pool or, as we called it, baking in the sun. |
