Asphalt, Concrete, Gravel, Beach Sand, and some Deck types.
Paws Softened by a day of Swimming are at Extra Risk. Keep an eye out in Tourist or Celebration areas for Broken Glass, Jagged Metal (like beer bottle caps), and discarded foods that your pup may try to snag. Burrs (like Sand spurs) in Nature Walkways and Trails can hide between paw pads while Sweet Gum Tree seed pods may hide in some tree lined sandy beaches. |
In the last week of May 2015, across Eight states, the people you would expect most to know better.....didn't.
That week claimed the lives of 11 dogs. Not just any dogs, but K9 Police Dogs. Its estimated that roughly 35-40 Children die in hot vehicles every year in this country. Most people think of their kids long before they think of their pets which is why, for pets, that number reaches into the Thousands.* There are many articles on this issue that is only beginning to get the attention it deserves. The highlighted article written by Dr. Katy Nelson for BarkPost.com details what happens, how fast, and what to do if it does happen. * According to a petition on Care2 written by ASPCA |
Sanctuary Animal of the Month
Kankuro is a rescued snake who came to us from another rescuer whose circumstances changed drastically and they needed a place for several reptiles to go. We weren't looking to add another Ball Python into the sanctuary but we were happy to take him in. That was over 10 years ago!
Rescuing a Reptile is serious business. Many reptiles, like Birds, live very long lives. A well cared for Ball Python can live up to 30-35 years in captivity! Some individuals have been said to make it to 50 while while in the wild they can only expect about 10-15 due to predation by other animals INCLUDING humans.
Kankuro, who was already around 10 years old, was a guy who occasionally would get into a little trouble. In fact, in his previous home he managed to disappear for 2 months and was found hiding in a couch! Here at ALPRAS he has been a pretty good boy and also has a very very secure enclosure to keep him safe. Now at a healthy roughly 20 years old, we can expect to have him a good while longer.

With all animals, it is imperative you do research. Whether its as commonplace as a cat or dog breed, standard pocket pets like Guinea Pigs, Hamsters, and Rats, more 'Exotic' types like Birds and Reptiles, and ABSOLUTELY extreme exotics...
DO. YOUR. RESEARCH.
Many animals require far more care than most people expect.
For the health and happiness of both you and your pets its always best to seek professional advice whenever possible.

Spock wanted to say, Happy Easter!Spock is a happy, healthy, boy and off all his Meds. Head and Shoulders keeps the yeast and itchies at bay and his skin in great order. Spock and Herschel are best buddies and brothers always together. Its hard to believe he's 7 already. He's gotten so grey! Spock loves his family and is always right at their feet and next to his brother.

New 'Mews'
Meet Solenya!
This 'Pickle Girl' is a temporary Sanctuary Cat while her family is displaced. She is doing well and giving the other animals a run for their money. This goes triple for Blizzard. Solenya is just like Blizzard back when she was a kitten herself! She's a fun Tortie who is active, inquisitive, and affectionate. She makes people laugh with her antics...even when she's a little troublemaker. Most of the other Sanctuary animals and pets are elderly so its fun to see her light up their day and make them want to play or be given extra affection from Solenya herself. While she is a cat, she definitely has the soul of a dog! We joke often that she was a pup in her past life. All and all its nice to have some young blood in the house and we are happy to have her here until she is able to be reunited with her loving family who misses her greatly. Make sure you eat all your soup! - Solenya, probably. |
General Information
We had to make a big move to the West Coast of Florida in recent years. Though we are no no longer on the South East Coast, we will still adopt out to both coasts and central Florida. This move, along with the hardships of COVID and 2020 has had a lot of impact on us as we have had to begin from the ground up in our local area. This has been tough as we reorganize our personal lives and try to find solutions.
Due to this we will not be currently bringing in more animals (unless its an emergency we run into) until we have the capability to have the time, space funding, and foster homes available. We will never stop being committed to the animals we have in the Rescue and Sanctuary and will continue to support animals in whatever way we can during this time period. Thank you all for your continued support, it means so much to us and we are eternally grateful. |
Pets in Need
At this time most of the animals are doing well. Any donations we receive will go towards food, litter, supplements, medications, and vaccinations for the Foster and Sanctuary Animals in our care.
