Overall Physical Health – Health (4)
Weight (5)
(1=severely emaciated, 5 – 6 normal, 10 = morbidly obese)
Edgar is of a normal weight and body scale. His actual physiology is not completely on par with his breed. Though he comes from a line of championship Bombay Cats, he didn’t get any of the good genes. He stays relatively healthy in every way with exception to him being Brachycephalic. This means basically that he is a short nosed animal prone to respiratory issues. More on the subject can be researched directly via the internet. (Sites such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brachycephalic_syndrome) give a good accounting of the issue. Aside from this, he leads a normal life. Adopters should be aware that he can be more prone to URI (Upper Respiratory Infections) than normal cats. Simple precautions can avoid this situation and will be covered during adoption process.
Overall Mental Health – Good (5)
Edgar is of good mental health. He can be a little full of himself at times. Edgar is of a lower intelligence but he manages quite well. He can be quite the Character.
People – Excellent (5)
Edgar loves people. He likes to show off and loves to be pet. He will happily sit forever on or near a person who is willing to pet him. He enjoys curling up in laps and resting nearby people or even other animals. If he feels he has not gotten enough attention, he will place his paw on the person’s cheek to ask for continued attention. Sometimes he will add a soft mew.
Children – Excellent (5)
Edgar loves children the same as he loves adults. He is generally good about letting children pick him up and move him.
Dogs – Excellent ( 5 )
Edgar has been around dogs for nearly his entire life. He does well with them and doesn’t mind being close to them. He is capable of holding his own, though most dogs seem to be sensitive to his condition and either give him extra room or stay near him while resting.
Cats – Excellent ( 5 )
Edgar has lived around cats his entire life. He has gotten along with every foster, sanctuary, and pet cat he has run into save two. The female senior cat that beat him up and made it so he had to be rehomed initially and one other female cat who had become essentially ‘Persona non Grata’ to all the other cats. The latter cat he can co-exist with, but there are tiffs every now and again. Edgar is not the kind of cat that seeks out trouble and has otherwise dealt peacefully with over hundred or so other cats through his time in the rescue.
Pocket Pets – Average (3)
Edgar shows interest in rodentia pocket pets but has not caused them any harm to date. ALPRAS does not currently have any pocket pets; however, he did have a lot of contact with a guinea pig in the sanctuary. He would ‘pet’ her through the bars of her crate. Though he has not harmed any smaller animal, to be on the safe side, introductions to these animals should be done carefully and with consideration to both species.
Behavioral Issues – Minimal ( 1 )
Edger does not have any major behavioral issues. The worst he’s ever done is be a bit of a snarky cocky boy from time to time. Otherwise, general nuisance behaviors found in any cat are all that he has i.e. jumping on tables or countertops that he isn’t supposed to.
Energy – Low ( 2 )
Edgar is a low energy cat and this is a good thing. Some of this may be attributed to the issues he has with breathing. He is happy as a lap cat and falls under the Love Bug category type.
Meowing – Minimal (1 )
Edgar is mostly a quiet cat. His mews are just as quiet when he does do them. If he meows it is completely for human benefit only. Otherwise he is silent aside from his breathing/snoring.
Swimming – Poor ( 1 )
Edgar can swim in an emergency but he cannot do it for long. Here at ALPRAS we teach every animal how to swim. We do this to ensure that if a home has a pool, that they can get out of it. It is not good for Edgar to swim due to his respiratory issues. He is at an increased risk for getting water into his lungs and that could be deadly for him. Still, he is made sure how to get to the stairs or ledge of the pool where he can get out about every 6 months so that he can exit quickly, safely, and with as little impact on him as possible.
Toys – Good ( 4 )
Edgar is in love with Kitty Wands. Every type he will happily play with. He will play with other toys if they are provided. He enjoys shiny things and he seems to like catnip. His rating of 4 is not because he doesn’t enjoy them, it is a warning to be aware when playing with him to watch his level of breathing and exhaustion. He is pretty good at regulating himself, but sometimes he gets caught up in it all too much to remember.
Known Commands:
Sit, Wait, On, Off, Back, Swim, Play, Come(here), Eat, Drink (little only or cats only), Leave It, No(when needed), Yes, Go, Stay, Crate, Stop, Enough, Give Space, Get Out Of That, Go Do Something With Yourself, Don't do it, Back Off, Play, Egger
Commands Working On -
As with most cats, there are not a whole lot of commands they need or use. Currently there are no new commands he is being trained to know.
Other Notes:
Edgar is an extremely beloved foster/sanctuary cat here at ALPRAS. He can be quite a character and is a fun cat in his own way. His under bite is endearing and he takes great pride in being a ‘Reverse Vampire Kitty’. It may sound silly, but we do not talk about the fact he only has one lower fang now. The reality is that he may need to have it removed in the future and may require more dental care than some cats. Edger may not be a good candidate to ‘go under’ for procedures and will require a pass from a veterinarian who understands his complications. He has come far since coming to ALPRAS. He went from having difficulty doing simple things like cleaning himself, eating, drinking, and acting normally, to adjusting and becoming learned with help from other foster cats and dedicated sanctuary cats. As with all ALPRAS animals, a Home Visit is required to ensure he goes to the best place for him.
